Main content

There are four dedicated bench spaces available in a visitor lab for basic molecular biology work, including:

  • Micropipettes
  • Mini-centrifuge and table-top centrifuge
  • Heat block & water bath
  • Shakers
  • Fridge & freezer space
  • Storage space for chemicals, including acids/bases, flammable and toxic material
  • Instruments for DNA and protein electrophoresis and blotting are available.

Cell culture laboratory

The cell culture laboratory is an access-restricted room for working with organisms under sterile conditions. Guests can work in the cell lab after having received a short, one-hour-long training session organized by the Centre. The laboratory is equipped with a laminar flow hood VFBS 1206 E (restricted to mammalian cell lines, e.g., HEK, Hela, neurons), Thermo Scientific™ Safe 2020 Class II Biological Safety Cabinets (restricted to choanoflagellates), and a Holten Pure air workbench (for any other organisms). Two incubators, Thermo Scientific Hercells Vios 160i and Binder CB 170with O₂ control, are also available. In addition, the laboratory is equipped with a Nikon eclipse TE2000-S microscope (with fluorescence), 4°C fridge, -20°C freezer, and bench microcentrifuge.

Class C Isotope Laboratory

The isotope laboratory is an access-restricted room for working with low-activity radioactive sources. Guests willing to work in the isotope lab should have a training certificate for working with radioactivity, or they must work under the supervision of a certified person. Radioactive sources must be registered and purchased with the responsible of the Isotope lab.

The laboratory is certified for the manipulation of up to 10 GBq for S, P, H and up to 10 MBq for 32P. The laboratory is equipped with a fume hood, 4°C fridge, -20°C freezer, plexiglass shields, shielded waste bins, bench microcentrifuge, PCR thermocycler, electrophoresis system, and gel dryer. The laboratory has a handheld Geiger counter for crude radioactivity measurement and a set of Phosphor Imaging plates and cassettes. A plate reader and liquid scintillation counter are accessible at the Department of Biology.
