Mari Heggernes Eilertsen is a marine biologist and researcher at the Department of Biological Sciences (University of Bergen), affiliated with the Centre for Deep Sea Research and leading the CBE Arctic team. Her work focuses on chemosynthesis-based ecosystems in the deep sea, such as hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, and organic falls. These unique habitats host highly specialized species that are often endemic and vulnerable to human impacts. Mari’s research focuses on understanding who lives there, how they evolved, and how these communities are connected across oceans. She combines taxonomy, genetics, and biogeography to uncover the evolutionary stories of species that have adapted to extreme environments.
