Marine environments harbor natural products with chemical features distinct from those of terrestrial plants, offering an expanded landscape for discovery. Despite this diversity, marine natural products remain comparatively under‑researched, as terrestrial ecosystems have historically been—and continue to be—the primary source of studied natural products over more than a century. Drawing on long‑standing terrestrial phytochemistry and over a decade of marine research, Jordheim highlights key challenges and emerging opportunities in advancing marine natural product chemistry and chemical ecology.
