Implicit Learning of Distributed Cues in Language and Music
Open Seminar organized by Professor Arve Egil Asbjørnsen from the Department of Biological and Medical Psychology at the University of Bergen
Main content
The Seminar
Language disorders affect a significant number of our children, and language-based learning disorders have serious impact on the lives of a considerable part of the population. More established theoretical models have only yielded limited success as tools for intervention and remediation of language disorders. Recent studies on implicit learning of distributed stimuli have unveiled insights into the acquisition of probabilistic knowledge and the formation of anticipatory mechanisms in both linguistic and musical domains. Implicit statistical learning is not only fundamental to our adaptive capabilities but also pivotal to our cognitive development. Recent scholarly attention has shifted towards unraveling the contribution of this elemental learning process to more sophisticated forms of knowledge acquisition, both within music and language.
During our seminar, we will engage in a dive into the practical applications of implicit statistical learning. We will discuss its potential and its contributions to our knowledge on perception of music and language as well as on language learning. Statistical language learning has also shown valuable as a tool for developing intervention for language disorders, and we will discuss how this research pave the way for innovative strategies in treating language disorders.
