When Scandinavian Epigraphy Became Latinized
The inaugural lecture of the Encounters Lecture Series, established in 2025 as a joint initiative of the Norwegian Institutes in Athens and Rome, will be delivered by Alessandro Palumbo, Associate Professor of Medieval Studies at the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies, University of Oslo.

The Encounters are a series of alternating guest lectures by emerging researchers from Norway, Italy and Greece on topics connecting the the cultures, histories, and academic traditions of the Mediterranean and and the Nordic countries. The series is jointly organized by the Norwegian Institutes in Athens and Rome, alternating between the two cities. The lecture given by Dr Palumbo on 2 October is the inaugural lecture of the series.
At the official launch of the series, Dr Delia Tzortzaki (Senior Advisor & Leader of the Norwegian Institute in Athens) and Prof. Han Lamers (Director of the Norwegian Institute in Rome) will discuss the inspiration behind the series and the joint mission of Norway’s institutes in the Mediterranean.
