New Volume in the Papers and Monographs from the Norwegian Institute at Athens

The Norwegian Institute at Athens is pleased to announce the publication of a new volume in its Papers and Monographs series:

Stylistic Innovation in Western Greek Ceramics: Western Archaic Polychrome Pottery in Context, edited by Signe Barfoed and Catherine Morgan.

The volume presents the proceedings of the international workshop Archaic “Elian Style” Pottery in Western Greece, held at the Norwegian Institute at Athens on 18 November 2022.

The volume wis now available in open access through the Institute’s website and the Norwegian Research Information Repository.

Abstract by the Editors

This volume presents a comprehensive study of Western Archaic Polychrome Pottery from the Late Geometric through the Archaic period. Incorporating new archaeological evidence from recent excavations, rescue projects, and reassessments of legacy material, it examines the role of the western Corinthian Gulf and surrounding regions—Achaia, Elis, Aitolia, Akarnania, and the Ionian Islands—within broader networks of exchange extending to the Adriatic, southern Italy, Sicily, and North Africa. The volume draws on well-contextualised ceramic assemblages to refine stylistic developments, distribution patterns, and chronology, offering a more nuanced understanding of regional production and interaction beyond traditional reliance on Olympia and Elian Pylos. Intended for specialists in Greek archaeology and ancient ceramics, this study provides an important contribution to the understanding of interregional dynamics in the Mediterranean during the Late Geometric to Archaic period.
