With some exceptions, most of our courses are open for both international students and employees. We also offer a few courses to refugees and immigrants.

Norwegian language courses for international students
If you are new to Norwegian and only staying for a semester or two, we recommend NOR-INTRO.
NOR-U1 is also a course for beginners, and we recommend this course if you are staying in Norway for more than a year. If you already know some Norwegian, but have not taken a Norwegian language course at UiB (or other Norwegian universities) previously, we recommend that you take our placement test.
Courses without any entry requirements
- NOR-INTRO - Short Introductory Course in Norwegian (7,5 ECTS). (The course is ca. A2 in CEFR).
- NOR-U1 - Beginner's Level Norwegian (15 ECTS). (The course is ca. A2 in CEFR).
- NOR-U1/2 - Fast Progression level 1 and 2 (30 ECTS). (The course is ca. B1 in CEFR).
Courses with entry requirements
- NOR-U2 - Intermediate level Norwegian. Requires passed exam in NOR-U1 or placement test. (The course is ca. B1 in CEFR).
- NOR-U3 - Advanced level Norwegian. Requires passed exam in NOR-U2 or NOR-U1/2, or placement test. (The course is ca. B2 in CEFR).
- NOR-U4 - Proficient level Norwegian. Requires minimum grade C in NOR-U3 or placement test. (The course is ca. B1 in CEFR).
- NOR-NYN - Norwegian Nynorsk. Requirement is passed exam in NOR-U2 or placement test.
Norwegian language courses for employees and partners
We offer Norwegian language courses on four different levels to UiB employees and their partners.
Courses without any entry requirements
- NOR-U1 - Beginner Level Norwegian. (The course is ca. A2 in CEFR).
- NOR-U1/2 - Fast Progression level 1 & 2. (The course is ca. B1 in CEFR).
Courses with entry requirements
- NOR-U2 - Intermediate level Norwegian. Requires passed exam in NOR-U1 or placement test. (The course is ca. B1 in CEFR).
- NOR-U3 - Advanced level Norwegian. Requires passed exam in NOR-U2 or NOR-U1/2, or placement test. (The course is ca. B2 in CEFR).
- NOR-U4 - Proficient level Norwegian. Requires minimum grade C in NOR-U3 or placement test. (The course is ca. C1 in CEFR).
- NOR-NYN - Norwegian Nynorsk. Requires passed exam in NOR-U2 or placement test.
Norwegian language courses for refugees and immigrants
In order to qualify for UiBs Norwegian language courses as an external applicant, you need to qualify either through our placement test, or through previous Norwegian courses at UiB. External applicants must have temporary or permanent residency in Norway.
Courses with entry requirements
- NOR-U2 - Intermediate level Norwegian. Requires having qualified through the placement test. (The course is ca. B1 in CEFR).
- NOR-U3 - Advanced level Norwegian. Requires having passed the exam in NOR-U2 or having qualified through the placement test. (The course is ca. B2 in CEFR).
- NOR-U4 - Proficient level Norwegian. Requires minimum grade C in NOR-U3. (The course is ca. C1 in CEFR).
