Main content

"Norwegian Evening" is a special evening for students at Norskkursa, designed to encourage social interaction across language levels and give participants a taste of traditional Norwegian food. Some guest speakers are invited, and students who are interested are also welcome to contribute with their own performances.

The event was first held in 2018, organized by Norskkursa at UiB, and has since been arranged several times.

This time, the menu featured vegan lapskaus (stew) and fiskekaker from Søstrene Hagelin, along with some “curiosities” such as dried fish snacks, flatbrød, fenalår (cured lamb), and a variety of sausages (reindeer, venison, elk, and whale). There were also typical Norwegian cheeses like Selbu cheese, "brunost", "nøkkelost", and "gamalost". Small signs in both Norwegian and English explained the dishes and their ingredients.

Furthermore, skillingsboller (cinnamon buns) were served, as well as freshly made sveler (thick Norwegian-style pancakes) with raspberry jam. Those who were especially curious could try their hand at making sveler – and some truly enjoyed themselves and gave it their all!

More than 75 students attended, sitting either with classmates or mingling with students from other courses. There was a lively mix of Norwegian and English – and plenty of laughter. The teachers led the program, introduced the food, flipped sveler, helped with serving, and chatted with the students.

The evening also featured several cultural highlights: student Krishnan Dehaleesan performed on South Indian violin, colleague Klara Sjo gave an engaging talk about the letters Æ, Ø, and Å, and Hilde and Johannes performed two Norwegian songs – including “Her kjem Dampen.”

The evening was well received by the students, with many sharing positive feedback.

We’re already looking forward to the next "Norwegian Evening"!
