Systematic HSE-work
The occupational health service (BHT) must, in connection with the systematic HSE work, assist the employer, the employees, working environment committees and safety delegates in preventing work-related health problems, illness and injury, and creating healthy and safe working conditions.
Main content
The occupational heath service (OHS) has a free and independent position in matters of the working environment, and must independently inform the employer, employees and their representatives about risk factors in the workplace. Information and advice must be exclusively based on a professional assessment of the working environment conditions in the business. This applies in all contexts, both as an expert for the business or when following up a single employee.
Assistance in the systematic HSE work
The employer is responsible for ensuring that the working environment is fully satisfactory. The requirements for the employer’s use of occupational health services are defined in the Regulations concerning Organisation, Management and Employee Participation § 13-2.
The employer shall use the Occupational Health Service (BHT) as a professional and independent advisor in the systematic health, safety, and environment (HSE) work. BHT shall assist the employer, employees, safety representatives, and working environment committees in identifying, assessing, and preventing risks in the working environment. The service shall contribute to the implementation of necessary measures to ensure a fully satisfactory working environment. The employer must ensure that BHT is involved at an early stage in processes that may affect the working environment. The use of BHT shall be planned, documented, and regularly evaluated to ensure that the service effectively supports the organization’s HSE efforts.
The units’ need for assistance is identified using the University of Bergen’s tools for working environment mapping and risk assessment, as part of UiB’s systematic HSE framework: UiB's tools for systematic HSE work.
BHT may assist the unit with HSE risk assessments, the development of local HSE plans, and the follow-up of implemented measures. If the unit selects “Assistance from the Occupational Health Service” in the local HSE action plan, the unit must contact BHT by email at bht@uib.no.
