Information about the book

(translated excerpt from the publisher's pages)

"This book is the result of a four-year interdisciplinary research project, PlanCoast, funded by the Research Council of Norway. A common thread in the project has been the concept of integrated coastal zone management through municipal and regional planning according to the Planning and Building Act and management according to sector legislation. The expectation of seeing sea and land areas in context across municipal and sector boundaries is also central to the book.

Common to all the articles in the book is that they address and discuss current phenomena in the Norwegian coastal zone. The book contains both planning, social science and legal articles. Some articles are written in collaboration between authors with a background in various disciplines to ensure interdisciplinary approaches. The book also contains articles from professionals in the administration who deal daily with issues concerning the use and protection of the sea.

A common feature of the book is how planning according to the Planning and Building Act acts as an integrative tool in the coastal zone, in interaction with the sector legislation, and what the authors believe are the most important challenges to achieve more integrated management of the coastal zone in the years to come.

The book is edited by Knut Bjørn Stokke, associate professor at the Faculty of Landscape and Society, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and project leader in PLANCOAST Katrine Broch Hauge, associate professor at the Nordic Institute of Maritime Law, University of Oslo."
