AI for students

Students' Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Exams and Mandatory Assignments at the Faculty of Social Sciences

The Faculty of Social Sciences (SV) has defined five categories for the use of AI tools in exams and assignments. Each category outlines a specific area of AI usage, based on the tasks for which AI is employed. The categories do not specify which AI tools may be used, as the relevant tools can and will vary from subject to subject and over time.

Documentation

1: No AI Use

All parts of the work must be completed by the student without the use of AI.

This includes the early stages of the assignment, such as brainstorming or seeking inspiration for topics and research questions.

The student must confirm in a declaration upon submission that no AI tools were used.

2: AI Use for Idea Generation and Early-Stage Planning

AI may be used for general support activities such as information searches, gaining an overview of a topic and relevant issues, as a conversational partner for discussing academic content, or exploring perspectives and approaches.

All text and content in the final submission must be produced by the student.

The student must confirm that all text and content were produced by themselves.

The exam assignment may require the student to describe how AI was used, as an appendix to the submission.

3: AI-supported Editing

AI tools may be used to improve student-created work, such as for translation, proofreading, and/or enhancing text written by the student.

The student is responsible for the final result and must carefully evaluate all AI-generated content.

The student must include an appendix specifying the tool, version, how the AI tool was used, and the rationale for its use.

The exam assignment may specify additional documentation requirements.

4: AI Use for Selected Parts of the Subsmission

AI tools may be used to support the presentation of academic content based on the student’s own data, results, or analyses.

This may include generating figures, graphs, images, or tables, and using state-of-the-art tools within various academic fields.

The student is responsible for the final result and must carefully evaluate all AI-generated content.

The student must specify the tool, version, how the AI tool was used, and the rationale for its use in the submission.

The exam assignment may specify additional documentation requirements.

5: Full AI Use

AI may be used throughout the exam work in any way the student deems necessary or appropriate.

AI can act as a “co-pilot” to help meet the assessment criteria, enabling a collaborative approach that may enhance creativity.

The student is responsible for the final result and must carefully evaluate all AI-generated content.

The student must include an appendix specifying the tool, version, how the AI tool was used, and the rationale for its use.

The exam assignment may specify additional documentation requirements.

These AI guidelines were adopted by the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences on 10 June 2025.
