The lecture will take place on Wednesday 11 December at 4:15-6 pm in room 210 at Sydnesplassen 12-13.

Das Leben der Anderen will be screened in the same place on Wednesday 27 November at 3:15-5.30 pm. The film is about the surveillance regime of Stasi in the DDR and has won a number of prizes.

Jacob Howland describes his lecture thus: "This lecture explores the relationships between Gygean invisibility, poetic imagination and totalitarianism in Plato's Republic and in Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's recent film."
