Election to The University Board - candidate group A

Inga Berre

Main content

I am running for re-election to the University Board with great commitment and can promise continued dedicated efforts for the University of Bergen!

What I Will Work For

The development of strong academic environments is essential for high-quality research and research-based education. With the current financial constraints, it is crucial that we maintain and develop leading research environments. If re-elected, I will continue working to support career development from the PhD level to professor and research leader level, ensure strong recruitment processes and guidelines for expert committees, strengthen our policy for open science, facilitate the growth of research environments based on external funding, and secure access to high-quality research infrastructure and funding for our construction projects. I will also continue to promote collaboration in teaching and between staff and students, student-centered learning, and strong learning environments.

My work is guided by the principles of academic freedom, integrity and accountability in research, and the values of diversity and inclusion.

I believe that strong internal collaboration is important, in addition to being open and engaged in dialogue and cooperation with our regional, national, and international partners. With our strong and broad research profile, we can take leading roles in international research collaborations and in working with society and industry to address key societal challenges. Through my leadership of academic networks, scientific advisory roles, and research strategy work—both nationally and internationally—I clearly see the value of researchers at the university contributing actively.

I stand for university democracy and collegial governance. I will continue to advocate for the University Board to make well-founded decisions through transparent processes. Involving the organization through committees that work across the institution and facilitate participation is crucial for sound decision-making. To strengthen the leadership model with an elected rector, I will, if re-elected, again propose the establishment of a search committee in connection with rector elections.

About Me

I am 46 years old, professor at the Department of Mathematics and director of the VISTA Center for Modeling of Coupled Subsurface Dynamics. My research focuses on developing mathematical models and numerical methods to understand coupled processes in the subsurface, with particular interest in geothermal energy systems. This is the main topic of both an ERC Consolidator Grant and a FRIPRO project that I lead. I am highly engaged in training young researchers. At our center, we have a dedicated researcher training program to support their development. Including current students, I have supervised 22 PhD candidates, and it is rewarding to see them succeed.

I am involved in the international research community through research collaborations, scientific and strategic leadership roles in international organizations, participation in scientific expert and advisory panels, and editorial responsibilities in journals. Nationally, I have been member of portfolio and division boards at the Research Council of Norway. I am an elected member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences. At UiB, I have experience from the University Board, the Faculty Board, and as chair of the Equality Committee.
