The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an international research communication competition that challenges PhD candidates to present their research in just three minutes, using one static slide, to a general audience. Originally developed by the University of Queensland in 2008, 3MT has grown into an international event, with competitions hosted by networks such as the Coimbra Group and SANORD.

UiB invites PhD candidates from all disciplines to join our internal 3MT competition. The winner will represent UiB in the Coimbra Group and SANORD international finals.

Why Participate?

  • Enhance your research communication and public speaking skills.
  • Gain confidence in presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Compete for prizes:
  • The winner of the UiB 3MT Competition will receive a 1,500 NOK gift card, and two runners-up will each receive a 1,000 NOK gift card.
  • If selected as one of the three finalists in the Coimbra Group 3MT final, travel and accommodation expenses to Granada, Spain will be covered. Additionally, the final winner will receive €2,000, and the two runners-up will each receive €1,500.
  • If chosen by the SANORD jury, the UiB representative will have travel and accommodation expenses covered to attend the 2026 SANORD Conference at the University of Namibia.

  • February 12: Application deadline
  • February 17: Jury selects up to 12 participants
  • March 11: Coaching session (preliminary date)
  • March 24: UiB 3MT Competition
  • 16–19 June: Coimbra Group 3 MT live final, University of Granada, Spain
  • September: 3MT presentation at SANORD conference, University of Namibia, Namibia
 

Competition Rules

  • One static slide only (no animations or transitions).
  • No props or additional media.
  • Maximum 3 minutes – exceeding this will lead to disqualification.
  • Spoken word only (no poems, raps, or songs).
  • Presentations are to commence from the stage and are considered to have started when the presenter starts to speak.
  • The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.
