The Influence of Canon Law on Medieval Procedural Law
Seminar on the influence of Canon law on procedural law in the Middle Ages. Open lectures from leading experts in the field.
Main content
Canon law is the law of the Catholic church, and in the Middle Ages, it played a central role in the development of procedural law that we still see traces of in modern law. The procedural Canon law was practiced in ecclesiastical courts all over Europe, and the topic was the object of interest from many learned jurists. This contributed to Canon law becoming an influential and supranational source of legal development in European law.
The influence of Canon law on procedural law in the Middle Ages is the topic of an international and interdisciplinary seminar hosted by the Faculty of Law on 25th and 26th October. The seminar features the dissemination of new knowledge on the topic and discussions of the possibilities of future research.
Those interested in the meeting of ecclesiastical and worldly power in the Middle Ages, and those who wish to know more about the function of ecclesiastical courts and the role of the Catholic church in the development of law and society in the Middle Ages, are all very welcome to the Faculty of Law to attend open lectures from leading experts in the field.
The seminar is part of the research project Crossing Jurisdictional Borders: The Influence of Canon Law on Medieval Procedural Law, led by postdoctoral fellow Brage Thunestvedt Hatløy from the Faculty of Law.
The seminar and all papers will be in English.
