This talk will include a suite of topics concerning the evolution of cytochrome P450, beginning with a brief history of the P450 field. Topics will include the origin of the cytochrome P450 gene family in early biotic evolution, and the source and expansion of P450 genes in eukaryotes, which we propose is linked to evolution of sterol biosynthesis and CYP51. Specific evolutionary questions may consider, among others, evolutionary linkage of aryl hydrocarbon receptor and cytochrome P450 family 1 gene regulation, phylogenetic variation in active site architecture, the curious orphan cytochrome P450 gene family 20, evolutionary adaptation to the deep sea, diet as a force in vertebrate P450 diversity and regulation, and the enigmatic cytochrome P450 genes in giant viruses.
