Source to sink

The source-to-sink (S2S) concept represents a new generation of basin studies that takes into account sediment erosion, transport and deposition from catchment to deep basin.

Main content

The S2S concept represents a new generation of basin studies that takes into account sediment erosion, transport and deposition from catchment to deep basin. The individual parts of the basin-fill sedimentary succession and their depositional (palaeo-)environments are not considered as separate entities, but rather as dynamically linked systems that are equally important in the net transfer of sediment. The feedback mechanisms between production, transfer and storage of sediment and the interaction between sedimentary environments are crucial issues when considering the sedimentation systems tract as a whole. The ultimate goal is to reach a better understanding of the origin and volume of sediment eroded from the catchment and how this volume is partitioned within the depositional 'sink'. This research is a part of the newly started Earth System Modelling project in collaboration with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (UiB) and Statoil.
