Båtstrand in Party Politics

Sondre Båtstrand presents a new approach for categorizing politics in his article «Giving content to new politics», which will be published in Party Politics.

Since the 70's, political scientists have discussed New Politics, which emphasises individual freedoms, social equality and quality of life. This differs from Old Politics, where economic growth, security and a traditional lifestyle are regarded as more important values. In his article (link here)Båtstrand argues that empirical examples and relevant concepts have received to little attention from scholars, and it is also unclear how New Politics separates from Old Politics in regards to political measures, as for example taxation.

Båtstrands article is primarily theoretical, but it also presents empirical evidence that points to New Politics as an addition to Old Politics, rather than as a replacement or New Politics being absorbed by Old Politics.
