The Whale Hall reopened

The Whale Hall at the University Museum of Bergen has one of the world’s largest collections of whale skeletons. After two years of extensive renovation work it is now reopened.

Main content

The collection is an almost complete collection of the whale species that lived in the Northern Atlantic Ocean at the end of the 1800s, the majority of which are now protected by law and irreplaceable. The fact that many of the whale skeletons have been hanging from the ceiling ever since, do not make the special Whale Hall and the collection less unique.

The whale skeletons make a lasting impression on visitors as displayed in a hall covering a total floor area of c. 300 m2. Eleven of the skeletons are more than 5 m long, with a 24 m long blue whale as the largest one.

The Whale Hall at the Natural History Collections has an on-line presentation with information on the whale species represented there.
