Submission
Before a candidate may apply to have their thesis evaluated for the PhD degree, the training component must have been fully completed and formally approved.
It is the candidate who applies to have the thesis assessed, normally in consultation with their supervisor. The application must be submitted to the department using the standard application form, together with the required supporting documentation.
Required attachments:
- The thesis itself, submitted in PDF format and prepared in accordance with the University of Bergen thesis template. The template is available in the Thesis Portal under “Printing of private copies”.
- The number of printed copies of the thesis required by the department (maximum six copies).
- Documentation of any necessary approvals or permits, such as ethical clearances.
- Any required co-author declarations.
- Documentation of a master's degree, cand.philol. degree, or equivalent qualification (applies only to Dr.Philos. candidates).
- A copy of the passport for foreign nationals (applies only to Dr.Philos. candidates).
The Department
The department:
- Ensures that the entire training component has been completed and approved.
- For Dr.Philos. candidates, assesses whether the thesis constitutes a scholarly work, falls within the department’s academic fields, and satisfies the requirements of the University of Bergen's Dr.Philos. regulations. Based on this assessment, the department prepares a recommendation that accompanies the application when it is forwarded to the faculty.
- Forwards the application to the faculty together with one copy of the thesis (PDF) and any other relevant attachments.
- Organises the work of the evaluation committee, the trial lecture(s), and the public defence.
The Faculty
The faculty:
- Appoints the evaluation committee upon receiving a recommendation from the department.
- Chairs the public defence through the Dean or a person authorised by the Dean.
- Notifies the candidate that the trial lecture and public defence have been approved.
