Main content

The Faculty of Law is strongly committed to international collaboration in research and education, and we are continuously working to maintain, and to develop new, collaboration agreements with the best law schools and law faculties around the world.

We strive to make studies abroad available to our students, and to bring students from all over the world to our faculty to offer an international campus for those of our students who do not go abroad.

Our students and researchers benefit from more than 150 international partners on faculty level, in addition to benefitting from the University of Bergen’s many institutional partnerships.

Why do we want our students to go broad?

Among the students graduating with a Master of Law degree from the University of Bergen over the last decade, between 40 and 50 % had spent a semester or a year abroad as part of their studies.

We firmly believe that a semester or year abroad broadens the students’ perspectives, gives valuable knowledge about foreign law and legal cultures and provides the students with an international network which will be valuable in their future careers. Also, while learning about foreign law and legal cultures, the students simultaneously increase their understanding and awareness of special characteristics of Norwegian law and legal culture.

Through the five-year Master's program in Law, we want our students to learn to collaborate with lawyers from other countries. When our students graduate, they shall be able to understand and benefit from foreign lawyers' perspectives on common legal challenges, in addition to contributing with Norwegian perspectives. Future lawyers should also be able to communicate legal analyses in writing and orally in English, or possibly another foreign language, and studies abroad are an important means to this end.

Participation in European and International Networks

The Faculty of Law is a member of several European and International networks with the aim of enhancing international collaboration and sharing of knowledge and best practices.

The Faculty of Law was also a member of the Caen-Würzburg network until the network was dissolved in 2023.
