ORPHEUS; (Quality Assurance and Labeling process), in collaboration with the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE) and the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME), accredits the standards of doctoral (PhD) education programs globally. This initiative aims to harmonize the quality of doctoral education on an international scale.
The Faculty of Medicine has been awarded the prestigious Orpheus Best Practice Label in doctoral education, recognizing its exemplary practices for the forthcoming six years. As of 2025, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bergen achieved this accreditation again, having first received it in 2016. This places the faculty among other esteemed Nordic institutions such as the Karolinska Institute (KI), Lund University, the University of Copenhagen, and the University of Iceland.
The Orpheus Best Practice Label now serves as a benchmark for the faculty, positioning it as a leading European institution on the global stage and facilitating the implementation of best practices in doctoral education. This encompasses various aspects, including the research environment, admission policies and criteria, PhD training programs, supervision, PhD thesis assessment, and the structure of both research and graduate schools.
"This secures us an internationally recognized stamp of quality on par with other top universities and enables us to influence the development of European research education," says Vice-Dean Martha Enger (article in Norwegian).
