PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The goal of the work is to study to what extent and reliability diffractions from fault structures can be identified in the recorded seismic data. The work will consist of the following key elements: 1) Use seismic images processed in time or depth to identify areas where diffractions are likely to occur, e.g. in fault zones, for layers terminating toward salt bodies, other cases where layers terminate (e.g., pinch-outs), etc. 2) Simulate diffracted waves from such areas. 3) Quantify the extent to which one finds consistency with recorded seismic data. Both synthetic and real data sets will be used in the tests.
