MASTERS PROJECT - CLIMATE, ENVIRONMENT, ENERGY

Studying the human influence on glacier mass balance of Folgefonna ski centre

This Master's project was assigned to Nikolai Øvrebø who started on the Master's program in Earth Sciences, UiB, in the fall semester 2023. The Master's project is given by the research group Quaternary geology & paleo climate.

Main content

Project description
This project will involve using UiB's new drone to survey how the moving and compacting of snow done at Folgefonna ski centre throughout the spring are modifying the glacier mass balance. The student will survey two glaciers, one that is being modified, and one that is not. By repeating the surveying 2 to 3 times a year it will be possible to accurate measure the spatial distribution of snow depth and how it has been changing over time. The student can use historical aerial imagery to expand their time series back in time and study how the glacier mass balance has varied since the mid-20th century.

Proposed course plan during the master's degree (60 ECTS):
GEOV316
GEOV325
GEOV336

Prerequisites
The student must have experience with GIS.

Felt- lab- og analysearbeid
Fieldwork will be carried out 2 to 3 times a year at Folgefonna ski centre. All analysis will be computer based
