Horticulture on Summer Mountain Farms in Norway

It would not have been common to see a traditional garden surrounding the summer mountain farm houses (shielings) in earlier days.

Main content

These gardens were just a small space or corner where plants were allowed to grow undisturbed away from grazing animals. What types of plants were growing naturally around the shielings, and what were brought to the upland areas from lowland areas?

More about this and other articles are available (in Norwegian) in Bergen Museum’s Yearbook 2009. You can download both this article and the full version of the Yearbook here.

The Yearbook for Bergen Museum 2009 can be bought from our online shop, or in the Museum Shop at The Cultural History Collections. Price: NOK100.
