The project will study media use amongst Norwegian citizens in relation to two complex societal crisis situations: the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. Through innovative qualitative methods and an interdisciplinary approach, the project wishes to resolve paradoxes in the communication of crisis in digital societies.

Professor Brita Ytre-Arne (Department of Information Science and Media Studies) will lead the project, with amongst others Hallvard Moe (Department of Information Science and Media Studies) and Håvard Haarstad (Centre for climate and energy transformation). Internationally, they collaborate with Jannie Møller Hartley and the research project DATAPUBLICS at Roskilde University.

- This will be a very interesting project. We will try to find out whether media use research can contribute to solving paradoxes in our understanding of climate change, by seeing how we absorb information about complex societal crises, says project manager Brita Ytre-Arne.

The project has received 10 million NOK from the SAMRISK - Programme for Societal Security and Safety, which is under The Research Council of Norway's portfolio board for Democracy, governance and renewal.
