Momentum delegate Jakub Both

Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Mathematics

Main content

Jakub Both is a mathematician passionate about bridging disciplines and translating mathematical theory into tools for real-world impact. His research, driven by applications in geological CO2 storage and geothermal energy, lies at the intersection of image-based data analysis, mathematical modeling and analysis, and numerical methods, with a focus on flow and coupled multiphysics in porous media.

His work spans theory and application – from developing image analysis tools for laboratory CO₂ storage experiments to designing robust simulation technology for coupled processes in fractured porous media and advancing existence theory for multiphysics systems. A central theme is integrating mathematics with experimental reservoir physics, reflected in his contributions to digital twin technologies for porous media and co-leadership in open-source development for reproducible science.

Jakub is currently a researcher at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Bergen, affiliated with the Porous Media Group. He earned his PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Bergen, focusing on numerical methods for coupled porous media problems. His work has been recognized with the 2025 SIAM Activity Group on Geosciences Early Career Prize and winning the 2021 ECCOMAS PhD Olympiad.
