Main content

Application numbers for higher education continue to rise, with an increasing number of students applying for higher education programmes. This year’s application figures once again show growth in the social sciences, and we are seeing the same positive trend in the study programmes offered at the Department of Government. The growing interest in political sciences is both encouraging and important. In a world marked by uncertainty, transformation, and rapid change, the need for knowledge about politics, governance, and international relations is becoming ever more evident. Political science gives students insight into how decisions are made, how institutions function, and how societies can develop in a more sustainable and equitable direction. The fact that so many students are now applying to our programmes, reflects a strong engagement with societal issues among young people.

We are seeing a particularly strong increase in the number of applicants to the master’s programmes offered at the department. Across the two programmes we offer, a total of 287 applicants have either the MA in Politics and Governance of Global Challenges or the MA in Politikk og Forvaltning as their first-choice programme.

Head of Studies Martina Vukasovic commented on the increase in application numbers:

“These figures show that the work we as a department have carried out over the past years, not only continuously offering courses of both high quality and strong relevance, but also renewing all our study programmes with new elective courses and new pedagogical strategies, is being recognized.”

MA in Global Challenges and Governance

The master’s programme Politics and Governance of Global Challenges remains one of the most sought-after master’s degrees, with as many as 12.1 first-choice applicants per study place. This is the highest figure at the Faculty of Social Sciences and the third highest at the University of Bergen. With more than 180 applicants, it is clear that many students wish to deepen their understanding of issues related to politics, governance, and societal development. It is inspiring to see so many engaging with subjects that are crucial for understanding and shaping the future.

MA in Politics and Public Administration

We are also seeing an increase in the number of applicants to this programme, and we look forward to welcoming all the new students this autumn. We continuously work to improve our study offerings in order to ensure that both current and future students receive the best possible education. Compared with last year, we are seeing a 59% increase in applicants to this master’s programme, further underlining the importance and relevance of political science disciplines.

BA in Politics and Public Administration

We are seeing a gradual increase in application numbers for our bachelor’s programme, and it is encouraging to see that this has become a clear trend. In 2023, the programme changed its name from Administration and Organization Theory to Politics and Public Administration following a revision of the bachelor’s programme. It is rewarding to see that so many recognize the importance of the field and wish to study with us.
