Guidelines for special curriculum courses at PhD level

The course description for the specialised syllabus must be approved by the local research education committee before you start the course.  

The descriptions of the specialised syllabi shall be such that it is possible to assess their content, level and scope. The form of assessment must also be specified. Please, send the course description to the PhD coordinator using this form: https://skjemaker.app.uib.no/view.php?id=13391860

Possible assessment forms:

- oral examination (45 min.) with an external examiner for the courses credited with more than 2 ECTS

- written report only or in combination with oral presentation without the requirement of an external examiner for the courses credited with 2 ECTS or less.

Level and grade requirements

Letter grades (A-F) must be used when assessing the specialised syllabus. The performance for the courses included into the PhD education plan shall correspond to a grade of C or better. 

Each PhD candidate can have maximum 2 credits of special syllabus with an assessment without an external examiner.

Courses are credited with full credits according to ECTS standardization. One (1) credit corresponds 25-30 hours of work (including self-study and exam). Courses that give less than one credit (<25 hours) are not approved, and several smaller courses cannot be combined. Half credits will not be awarded.
