Financial support for stays abroad for PhD candidates and Postdoctoral Fellows
The Faculty of Medicine offers grants for research stays abroad for PhD candidates and Postdoctoral Fellows whose position is funded by UiB.
Main content
In order for a stay abroad to be granted it is a prerequisite that the candidate is back and active at the Faculty of Medicine at least 6 months before the postdoctoral period expires.
The purpose of the grant is to cover initial and additional expenditures in connection with research-related stays abroad. It is also possible to apply for travel expenses to be covered.
Two types of UiB employees are eligible for the grants:
1) Postdoctoral fellows with UiB funding. Deadlines 1 March and 1 October
2) PhD candidates with UiB funding / UiB research fellow (PhD) positions. Application deadlines are 1 March and 1 October.
Please note that it is not possible to apply for support for stays that start before the application deadline.
Since the scholarship is intended as part-financing of the stay abroad, it is encouraged to apply for other sources of financing (see the document on the bottom of the page).
Research stay abroad must be continuous.
You must be back in your position at UiB at least 6 months after returning from your stay abroad.
The faculty only covers travel expenses for the employee and accompanying children under the age of 18.
Applications should be sent via the department management for recommandations and signature, to:
Faculty of Medicine
Postboks 7804
5020 BERGEN
A report is to be submitted to the Faculty immediately upon return, no later than two months after returning to Bergen. You find the form on the bottom of the page. The report should be sent to the address above.
Postdoctoral Fellows (with UiB funding)
Application deadlines: 1 March and 1 October
The announcement of research grants only apply to postdoctoral fellows at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bergen, that are financed by the University/Faculty of Medicine. Externally financed postdoctoral fellow positions must apply for support through their respective financial sources (e.g NFR, Helse Vest, Innovest, Kreftforeningen).
Research grants are given in connection with stays abroad lasting from 3-12 months. Please note that support will only be given to take children for stays of 6 months or more. For stays up to 6 months, support will only be paid at the rate equivalent to travelling without children. In addition, it is possible to apply for travel expenses, on the condition that the least expensice mode of travelling is chosen.
The purpose of the grant is to cover initial and additional expenditures in connection with research-related stays abroad. A one year grant might be divided into four, to cover four different stays abroad. Reasons for the need of multiple stays must be given. If the stay covers more than two calendar years, an application to register the entire amount on year one must be submitted. Whether the entire or just parts of the period applied for is granted, depends on economic resources.
Postdoctoral Fellows are encouraged to apply other financial funds for support. Please see the document on the bottom of the page.
The ranking of the applications is based on the following criteria:
- Project description (a description of current and future research)
- The importance of the stay abroad, regarding for instance professional renewal, the possibility of applying new research methods earlier
- The length of the stay (3-12 months)
- The quality of the recipient academic group
- Publication activity
A recommendation from the applicant’s department, in addition to an invitation from the foreign research environment must be enclosed. A separate application form must be used, and the application should be submitted via the department, with approval from the Head of department.
The following rates apply:
Per month:
- Employee travelling on their own or with spouse/registrered partner: 20 000 NOK/month
- Employee travelling with child or children under 18: 30 000 NOK/month
If there are no accompanying children the 20 000 NOK/month rate applies.
