Wolin – town from the marshes and the question of Jómsborg

Arkeologisk Forskningsseminar og Middelalderklynga inviterer til foredrag fredag 9. juni.

Dr. Wojciech Filipowiak, arkeolog ved Centre for Medieval Archaeology of the Baltic Region (Wolin), Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology Polish Academy of Sciences, vil halde foredraget Wolin – town from the marshes and the question of Jómsborg.

Wolin was one of the largest craft and trading centers on the Baltic Sea in the early Middle Ages. It is special because it is an early city grown among marshes, functioning for nearly 400 years under changing social, religious and political conditions. Formed in a tribal environment, ruled initially by elders, then by an oligarchy, it evolved into a city republic and then into a town under ducal law under the rule of the Pomeranian Dukes. Numerous written sources are associated with the town, including Scandinavian sagas conveying information about the semi-legendary Viking fortress of Jomsborg. The lecture will present the characteristics of the city, the results of recent research, a hypothesis on the location of the Jomsborg fortress and planned future research.
