Deciduous trees are easiest to determine by the leaves. But the trees have prepared for next year's season by forming buds that will turn into leaves and flowers. Some trees have finished everything last year. In alder we see both male catkins and female catkins, while in hazel only the male is visible in winter.
We can use buds, catkins and bark to determine the tree species. Join a walk through the collections and see how many tree species we can identify.
