Migration

Migration is a global phenomenon tied to social inequality and processes of inclusion and exclusion. Understanding modern mobility, efforts to manage migration through policies and politics in everyday practices and through governance, and bordering processes require interdisciplinary approaches.

At UiB, researchers at different departments conduct individual and collective research projects on migration related topics. UiB will offer an interdisciplinary MA in Migration and Integration in collaboration with Roskilde University (RUC) in Denmark (to commence in 2023).

The Bergen School of Global Studies will bring together researchers and scholars interested the study of migration and modern mobility and their global challenges. Migration research ties strongly to themes in Bergen School of Global Studies, such as inequality, climate change, health, and governance.

International Migration and Ethnic Relations Research Unit Bergen (IMER Bergen) is an interdisciplinary research network that includes scholars at different departments and faculties at the University of Bergen, and Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI). The aim of IMER Bergen is to contribute to research-based knowledge about international migration and ethnicity and societal consequences.

IMER Bergen facilitates and assists research project development and applications, arrange conferences and research courses, publish a newsletter, and organize monthly lunch seminars. Core themes in the interdisciplinary IMER research are 1) Politics, Law and Mobilities; 2) Migration and Inequality; 3) Globalization and Mobilities.

IMER’s junior scholar network provides a platform for PhD candidates to share knowledge and experiences from variety of disciplines.

Global Development Theory and Practice
How can human rights and social justice be integrated in development processes? How do we appraise the consequences of global governance and the politics of aid? How does climate change impact on sustainable development? This programme gives you a thorough understanding of global development processes through critical evaluation of relevant theories and the contexts of sustainable human development.

Public Administration
Public Administration is the study of administration, organization and politics. The programme develops analytical skills through the use of relevant theories of organization and institutions. You will also learn how to design suitable research methods to study current complex governance and policy issues and their implications.

Sustainability
This programme gives students expertise in interdisciplinary approaches to dealing with global challenges. Using systems thinking and modelling approaches, the programme provides the students with the knowledge, skills and competencies required for understanding, analysing and shaping solutions to wicked problems in ways that are societally, ecologically and economically sustainable.
