Our research and teaching is concerned with microorganisms, i.e. algae, bacteria and viruses, in the marine food web, in the deep sea, in hydrothermal vents and in Arctic permafrost. Main content

Our research and teaching is concerned with microorganisms, i.e. algae, bacteria and viruses, in the marine food web, in the deep sea, in hydrothermal vents and in Arctic permafrost. We try to understand what regulates the activity, diversity and population dynamics of microbes, nutrient flow and turnover in the ecosystem and what role the microbes play for the climate. We are also concerned with the possibilities of using microorganisms in industrial processes, bioremediation and medicine production. The methods we use include classical microbiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics and modelling.

We have the academic responsibility for the teaching of the master's in biology, specialization in microbiology https://www.uib.no/studier/MAMN-BIO/MI/plan
