How can you help?

The most environmantally friendly kind of energy is the energy that you never use.

We have a shared responsibility for the environment and every individual can make a contribution.

  • Make it a habit to switch off the light every time you leave a room.
  • Don't open the window if the room is too warm, instead turn down the thermostat. If you need fresh air, only open the window for a short period of time and make sure to close it afterwards.

By paying attention to such matters we can save a great deal of energy and reduce our impact on global warming.

UiB has set a target to cut its energy consumption by 30% by 2030. The base year for comparison is 2018, when UiB's energy consumption was approx. 79,9 GWh.

The last target was reducing consumption by 20% from 2009 to 2019, which we succeeded to do.

The target has been ratified by UiB's board and forms part of UiB's Action Plan for the External Environment.

You can read more at Climate Neutral UiB.

Measures

UiB has implemented a range of energy-saving measures in order to achieve its target of a 20% cut in energy consumption.

  • UiB has put in place a comprehensive Building Management System (BMS). Managing energy consumption down to the level of individual rooms will improve control of the indoor environment and enable short response times for rectifying faulty equipment, operational timings etc.
  • By 2025 we will have installed from 10 to 12 000 solar panels at our roofs. This will generate from 2,5 - 3GWh each year.
  • We are building a system in Realfagbygget that will use seawater to produce heat and cooling for several of our buildings. The system will generate aproximately 10GWh worth of heat and 2,5-3 GWh worth of cooling each year.
  • UiB use the BREEAM NOR standard for buildings in all our construction projects. Renovation and new energy efficient buildings will reduce our energy use by 6-8 GWh by 2030.
