First aid course

Target group: All employees

Course content: Participants will acquire essential knowledge and skills in life-saving first aid. The course curriculum and materials adhere to nationally recognized guidelines.

Practical information: The course offers a balanced blend of theoretical instruction and hands-on practical exercises. It is scheduled to take place every semester. Keep an eye on the calendar for the next course.

Fire Safety Training

The Estate and Facilities Management division organizes the fire safety training at UiB. For more information, click HERE.

HSE risk assessment and SJA

Target audience: This course is relevant for anyone who wants to do risk assessments related to HSE, and is particularly relevant for managers, HSE coordinators and safety delegates.

Course content: Participants will learn two different methods: HSE risk assessment and Safe Job Analysis (SJA). Participants will perform HSE risk assessments and SJAs based on various scenarios in groups. 

Practical information: This course is held every semester and upon request. Keep an eye on the calendar for the next course.

Chemical Inventory

Target audience: All employees responsible for entering chemicals into the chemical inventory.

Course content: The course provides an introduction to the use of the chemical inventory system, and participants learn how to assess the risks associated with substances in the system.

Practical information: The training will be conducted in Teams. The course is offered on an as-needed basis.

Exposure Register

Target audience: Employees, students, and visiting researchers working with carcinogenic and genotoxic chemicals, ionizing radiation, lead, biological agents (risk group 3 and 4), asbestos, or hazardous substances in mining operations.

Course content: Training on the use of the exposure registry, which is a personal database where exposures at UiB are recorded.

Practical information: The training will be conducted in Teams. The course is offered on an as-needed basis.

Handling of Special waste

Target audience: All employees involved in waste management, mandatory for waste contacts.

Course content: The course covers waste management procedures at UiB, including how to declare hazardous waste, identify the correct waste code, and work in groups with specific examples. Practical examples and knowledge sharing will be emphasized. Participants will gain knowledge of internal waste management procedures at UiB, ensuring that generated waste is handled in a safe and proper manner.

Practical information: The course is held every autumn. Keep an eye on the calendar for the next course.

Radiation Protection Course

One-day Course: Radiation Protection - Ionizing Radiation

Target audience: Mandatory for those who do not have a radiation protection course at UiB: Local radiation protection coordinators, employees and responsible/supervising professionals awaiting the 3-day radiation protection course. PhD and master's students who will use radiation sources for a shorter period.

Others: HSE coordinators, safety delegates, and employees with delegated HSE tasks.

Course content: The course provides an introduction to applicable regulations, responsibilities, and task distribution at UiB, radiation doses, principles of radiation reduction, risk factors, and the use of protective equipment.

Objective: Users of radiation sources and others with responsibilities and tasks in radiation protection at UiB should meet the competence requirements set by laws and regulations.

Practical information: Held every other year, next course in 2024. Keep an eye on the calendar for the next course.

3-day Course: Radiation Protection - Ionizing Radiation

Target audience: Local radiation protection coordinators. The course is mandatory for radiation protection coordinators who have not taken the 3-day course before. Employees, PhD and master's students who work with or will work with ionizing radiation sources. Employees who have previously taken the course but wants a refresher. For employees and PhD/master's students who only sporadically use ionizing radiation sources, the one-day radiation protection course or the e-learning course in radiation protection is recommended.

Course content: The 3-day radiation protection course covers legal requirements, internal rules, and responsibilities, and is in line with the competence requirements for users of different radiation sources and local radiation protection coordinators at UiB. Participants will gain knowledge of key concepts and principles in radiation protection, including radiation doses, reduction of exposure, risk factors, use of measuring and protective equipment, and more. The course concludes with an assessment.

Practical information: The next course will be held in October 2023. Keep an eye on the calendar for the next course.

Gas Handling

Target audience: Employees who use gas in their work. Operations staff.

Course content:  UiB currently has a framework agreement with Nippon, and they will conduct this course. Relevant regulations, storage and handling, gas hazards and safety, gas equipment.

Practical information: The course will be held in Norwegian. Held annually. Keep an eye on the calendar for the next course.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Target audience: Employees, students, and guests who are required to use personal protective equipment when other means of safety cannot be ensured.

Course content: UiB has a framework agreement with Fisher and VWR, who will conduct training sessions. Participants will receive information on various types of personal protective equipment and learn about proper usage and application.

Practical information: The course will be held in Norwegian. The course is held annually. Keep an eye on the calendar for the next course.

Handling Violence and Threats

Target audience: Line managers at all levels, as well as the chief safety representative.

Objectives: Increase understanding of factors that affect our safety. Gain knowledge on how to prevent violence and threats. Enhance the ability to handle potential situations involving violence and threats. Learn how to mitigate potential harm and learn from our experiences.

Practical information: The course will be held in Norwegian. The course is arranged upon request.

HSE for Leaders

Target audience: Heads of departments and administrative leaders at faculties/departments, institutes, and central administration.

Objectives: Provide leaders with necessary knowledge of the fundamental principles of systematic health, safety, and environmental work (HSE work) and how to apply them in their own organization. The course offers an introduction to legislation, responsibilities, and roles in occupational health and safety. The organization of systematic HSE work at UiB is covered. An overview of the institution's regulations, resources, and tools for ensuring a fully safe working environment is provided. Emphasis is placed on the organization's policy and university-specific challenges.

Practical information: The course will be held in Norwegian. Conducted every semester. Please refer to the calendar for the next course.

Basic HSE Training for safety delegates

Target audience: The course is mandatory for safety delegates and substitute safety delegates who have not previously completed the course.

Objectives: The course aims to provide an introduction and orientation to the Working Environment Act and other relevant laws and regulations. Participants will gain an understanding of what constitutes a fully safe working environment in their workplace, as well as the roles and responsibilities in HSE work. The course will enable participants to identify factors that promote or hinder a good psychosocial and organizational work environment in their organization. Additionally, participants will learn to identify the key physical work environment factors in their own workplace in order to reduce and prevent injuries and accidents.

Practical information: The course will be held in Norwegian. The course is a mandatory 40-hour training for safety delegates, and participants must complete 75% of the course to receive a certificate of attendance.

The course is held every other year after the safety representative election. The next course will be offered in spring 2025 after the next safety delegate election in autumn 2024.

E-learning Courses

E-learning for Laboratory Staff

This course provides an introduction to the safe use of chemicals, how to use the chemical registry, exposure registry, and personal protective equipment, as well as how to dispose of hazardous chemicals. The e-learning course is modular, and each module concludes with a short quiz.

This e-learning course in Radiation Protection serves as a simple tool for local training of students/employees while awaiting the day course/3-day course. The course is a low-threshold offering that local radiation protection coordinators can use for local training, but it is not intended to replace the need for other courses.

E-learning CIM Travel Administrator

This course is designed for individuals appointed as travel administrators at their institute/center or department. In this course, you will learn more about your role as a travel administrator related to fieldwork, expeditions, and group travel, as well as how to use CIM (CIM version 20.02).

E-Learning in Security

Sikresiden.no has developed e-learning courses with short lessons that take 3-7 minutes to complete. Here, you can go through brief lessons in Basic Security Training, Information Security, What to Do in the Face of Ongoing Life-Threatening Violence, Privacy (GDPR) and Ethics in Research, Security at the Start of Studies, and Radicalization.

E-Learning in Dealing with Life-Threatening Violence

In this e-learning course, you will learn how to increase your chances of surviving an ongoing life-threatening violent situation. The course consists of five modules.

E-Learning Course in health, safety and environment (HSE) for Operational Staff in the Estate and Facilities Management division.

To better understand how to protect oneself, an e-learning course has been developed to provide basic training in laws and regulations, personal protective equipment, the chemical inventory system EcoOnline, safe job analysis, and the handling of hazardous and problem waste.

In this course, you will learn various measures to maintain good health in the office. You will be able to adjust your own workstation according to good ergonomic principles.
