Main content

Abstract

About 20 years ago Joan Daemen and Vincent Rijmen finished the design of Rijndael, the block cipher that would be selected by NIST (the National Institute of Standards and Technology) as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) in 2000. Since then, Rijndael itself but also its underlying design strategy has become very influential in the world of cryptography, and today provides security on virtually all electronic devices in the industry, society, and everyday life.

The talk will begin with an explanation of the original design strategy of AES. Next, a survey of the highlights of the first 20 years of Rijndael will be given, and the talk will conclude with the most recent interesting developments and an outlook towards the future of Rijndael.
