International PhD students with external financing
This information is mainly for international PhD candidates with external financing corresponding to the full support amount from the Norwegian State Education Loan Fund ( NOK 137.907 per year).
Main content
International PhD candidates/ researchers with own funds that have been granted a residence permit according to the the Immigration Act section 26 (Immigration Regulations section 6-20) and can register and be given student status at the University of Bergen.
Required documentation
The following documentation must be send to: studentconfirmation@uib.no
- Letter of approval of residence permit from the UDI.
- Admission/invitation letter to the University of Bergen
- Documentation of financing
Semester fee and registration
Most students need to pay the semester fee, currently NOK 650 per semester. The exception is given only to exchange students coming through an exchange agreement with a partner university. Other international students are not given exemption.
All students at the University of Bergen must complete their semester registration at the Studentweb and pay the semester fee every semester.

The semester fee invoice will not be automatically generated for PhD. students. You must therefore send an e-mail to studentconfirmation@uib.no in order to obtain it.
Please note that it is how the stay in Norway will be financed that determines what type of residence permit PhD. researchers are eligible for.
*Researchers that will be full-time employed and remunerated by a Norwegian institution/company, will be granted a residence permit that entitles them to work in Norway according to the Immigration Act section 23, cf. the Immigration Regulations section 6-1.
*PhD. researchers in this category will not be entitled to student status and benefits.
Housing
Housing guarantee is given only to PhD. students admitted to UIB for at least one semester financed by NORPART and other similar programs financed from Norway (only first time applicants to SAMMEN housing)
Conditions to be eligible for a housing guarantee:
- Residing abroad at the time of the admission.
- Submit the application for student accomodation within the deadline.
- Arriving at the beginning of the semester (rent must be paid from 1 August/1 January).
Please note that housing guarantee ensures a space in a student hostel; however a specific room type is not guaranteed.
Family and couple apartments are not included in the housing guarantee.

Insurance
All international students must have valid health insurance while in Norway. The University of Bergen does not provide liability insurance for students.
