Academic Writing with AI – How to Teach Students?

Students want instruction on how to use AI in their academic work. In this workshop, we take a closer look at how this can best be done.

Main content

A recent survey conducted at the University of Bergen shows that nearly half of the students use AI weekly or more often, while the majority disagree that they receive sufficient training.

We invite you to a workshop to collaboratively explore how educators can meet this need in a professional and ethical way. We will look at what students are actually learning today, how they use AI in practice, and how we as educators can support responsible and effective use throughout the writing process – from brainstorming to revision.

We welcome staff who are interested in learning more or who have already experimented with teaching using AI/LLMs in their humanities courses. There will be ample opportunity to share experiences, explore opportunities, and discuss challenges

Program

Session 1 – Frameworks, practices, and progression (45 min)

We begin with a look at the current situation: How are students using language models, and what are they already learning (e.g., reading strategies, summarization, and basic source evaluation)? We’ll open with a brief discussion on openness, source criticism, and copyright in a practical context, and explore whether and how AI can support student work without taking over. Then we’ll look at a simple progression through the writing process: from shaping a research question, through reading and structuring text, to revision and editing – with AI as a helpful assistant.

Session 2 – Sharing cases from your own teaching (45 min)

In the second session, we invite you as an educator to present short examples or cases where you have used language models in your teaching. Preferably something that can be tested in practice. The goal is to inspire each other and exchange useful advice: What was the objective, what did you do, how did it work, and what would you adjust?

Welcome!

The workshop will be held in Norwegian.
