How to search in Oria
Instructions on searching and requesting documents in Oria.
Oria is a search engine which you can use to find printed and electronic resources
at the University Library, e.g. books, eBooks, articles, journals, encyclopedias,
PhD theses, music and films. In addition, you can search for documents at other
university and subject libraries in Norway.
This page contains short instructions on how to sign in, manage loans and orders
and how to search for literature in Oria.
Use the blue box at the top of the University Library’s web page to search in Oria.
Type in your search terms in the search field and click «Search in Oria».
To request books and articles from the library one has to be signed in to Oria.
Students and employees at the University of Bergen can sign in via Feide (UiB username and password), employees at Helse Bergen choose «Username and password» to sign in (User ID is usually your library card number). Read more about signing into Oria.
In «My Account» you find an overview of your loans and requests and have the
option to renew your loans. When signed in, you can find «My Account» in the
menu labeled with your name, in the top right corner of the Oria web page.
Request documents on loan
If you are interested in a book, film, etc. which is on loan, you can request the item
in Oria. Sign in, click on the document title you are interested in to open the detailed
view mode and use the «Request» button. You will receive an advice of arrival on
your phone/email when the item is ready for pickup at the library.
Request from other libraries
If you are interested in a book, journal article or other item which is not available at
the University Library, you can request the item in Oria. Submit a «Resource Sharing
Request» by clicking the request button in the document’s detailed view mode.
You can also send a purchase suggestion to the library if you think the item should
be part of our collection.
Limit and save search results
You can limit your search to get a tidy list of results. You can choose which type of
resource you want to be displayed, or choose a certain time frame, language or
library. The filters are listed in the right hand margin of the list of results.
To lock a filter for the following search, move the cursor over the filter in the section
«Active filters» and click the padlock symbol.
You can save your search results by using the pin symbol beside each individual
reference or the «Save query» button above the list of results to save all results.
Use the citation or email symbol to download or send references.
You can also search by subject in Oria. By using search techniques such as truncation,
synonyms and by combining search terms you can increase the relevance of your
A large amount of today’s literature is available in electronic form. You can search for
eBooks, journal articles and other electronic literature in Oria and read the full text
either online or as a PDF. To open the full text, click on the full text link in the section
«View It» in the document’s detailed view mode.
Access to electronic resources
If you are off campus, you have to connect via VPN to access our e-resources.
Employees at Helse Bergen have access to UiB's electronic resources (with some exceptions) at the workplace/hospital network.
Click «Databases» in the blue Oria search box or in the Oria top menu
to find links to relevant databases in your subject. You can limit the list of databases
to a subject or search for a specific database. When you are searching in databases/
search engines, it is advisable to use the database’s/search engine’s own help pages
on how to search in each of them.
To get an overview and direct links to electronic journals, use the «Journal Search» link
located in the Oria top menu, or simply search for the journal's title or ISSN in Oria.
If you experience problems with searching or signing in to Oria:
Make sure that you are at the correct Oria URL https://uib.oria.no/.
