Rhododendron faithiae blooms in October

Rhododendron faithiae, which we received in 2014, has this year produced a fantastic autumn display in the Rhododendron species collection.

Rh. faithiae is a rare species that only grows in a few places high up in the mountains between Hanoi and Hong Kong. It belongs in subsection Fortunea. It is extra special as it has its main flowering in autumn, usually in September!

At the end of June 2024, it bloomed with us for the first time; there were only 2 flowers, but since it was the first flowering it was still a great sight.

An even bigger surprise was the abundant flowering now in mid-October! It has produced plenty of big fragrant flowers. The flowers are very similar to Rh. auriculatum in both shape and size, but the scent of Rh. faithiae is even stronger.
