The department is engaged in research and teaching wihtin a range of fields related to public health and primary health care.
Important areas of interest are among others:
- The study of prevalence of healthrelated issues in the population
- The identification of causes for disease in the population as specified by age, gender, work factors, social factors, etc
- The study of the public health system, and how society deals with health issues
- The study of how individuals deal with illness and poor health
- The evaluation of preventive health measures designed to promote good health

Blandina awarded best poster at GlobVac conference
PhD candidate Blandina Mmbaga won the prize for best poster at the conference “Contributions to Global Health Research, Capacity Building and Governance”.

NEW PUBLICATION
Biomarkers related to one-carbon metabolism as potential risk factors for distal colorectal adenomas
Stefan De Vogel has published an article at the journal of Cancer, biomarkers & prevention where he shows that high plasma concentrations of methionine and betaine, and vitamins B2 and B6 may reduce risk of developing colorectal adenomas. In addition to B-vitamins, methyl group donors such as methionine and betaine may play a role in colorectal carcinogenesis.

Immigrant GPs important for the Norwegian health care system
Immigrant GPs draw upon personal experience from their home country and as immigrants themselves, to better help immigrant patients with medical issues. A new article shows that this cultural competence is an important resource in clinical practice.
