To Enceladus and back again: seafloor hot springs, the search for life's origins, and life itself in the Solar System"

"Spectacular hot springs are found all along Earth's ~89,000km of seafloor tectonic plate boundaries (mid-ocean ridges, subduction zone volcanoes). Better known as ""black smokers", these hot springs vent gas- and mineral-rich waters (~400°C), forming oases for ancient microbial life in an otherwise barren deep ocean. Now the subject of international economic interest as potential resources for metals (e.g. copper), preparations to mine these environments are racing ahead. Researchers like myself study and highlight the scientific importance of these dramatic seafloor vents - not only as analogs for where life could have begun on Earth, but as key targets in the search for life beyond Earth, on icy ocean moons of the outer Solar System. In this presentation, I will share some my experiences of exploring and studying these hot springs in the deep sea, and why they are important, albeit exotic, features of earths seafloor."
