How to apply for Norwegian language courses

International students

International students can sign up for Norwegian language courses in Studentweb.

Main content

You may sign up for a Norwegian language course in Studentweb if you are an exchange student or an international Master's student at the University of Bergen.

Bachelor's students, one-year programme students and post studies students do not meet the requirements and will not be admitted. PhD Candidates are considered employees and must apply in Søknadsweb.

Registration

You can apply up for Norwegian language courses in Studentweb within the registration period:

NOR-INTRO, NOR-U1, NOR-U1/2: Studentweb opens on 12 December, 00:00 AM. (Admission to the beginner's level on a first-come, first-served basis has been removed from Spring 2023). The application deadline is 9 January.

NOR-U2, NOR-U3, NOR-U4, NOR-NYN: Studentweb opens on 18 January, 8:00 AM. (Admission to higher level remains unchanged with directly sign up).

The registration deadlines are 1 February and 1 September.

Please note that you may only be registered for one Norwegian language course per semester. Exception: NOR-NYN may be combined with NOR-U3 or NOR-U4.

Language entry requirement

There are no language entry requirements for NOR-INTRO, NOR-U1 or NOR-U1/2, but admission to our higher level courses require that you have already passed a lower level. Alternatively, you may qualify through a placement test.

Wait list

If the course you are trying to register for is full, you may sign up for our wait list. Students on the wait list will be notified if and when seats open up. We also recommend visiting Studentweb regularly in January/August.

Please note that we have a limited number of seats reserved for international students. Registrations are on a first come, first served basis. We will, however, reserve some seats on level 2, 3 and 4 for exchange students studying Norwegian at their home universities.

If you are required to take a Norwegian language course by your home university, we ask that you let us know as soon as possible.

The wait list for NOR-U2, NOR-U3, NOR-U4, NOR-NYN is available here.

Schedule

Our courses take place on campus. Make sure that you sign up for a course group that fits your schedule and that you have enough time between your courses to get from one to the other. You must also make sure that your exams don't conflict.

Switch groups

If you need to switch groups after you have signed up in Studentweb and there are no free seats, you must find another student who wants to switch with you. Once you have found someone to switch with, you can fill out this form.

Placement test

Applicants who have acquired knowledge of Norwegian outside of UiB, may sign up for a placement test. This is necessary for admission to NOR-U2, NOR-U3, NOR-U4 and NOR-NYN.

The placement test cannot replace exam results. The test is not graded, and we do not issue any certificate of the test. If you have taken any of our courses during the past two years, you may not take the placement test.

Please note that it is not possible to appeal the result of the placement test.

You may sign up for the placement test here

Students who have qualified for a level by completing the placement test may be moved up or down a level after the course has started. This is because language skills are better evaluated in class.
