New E-learning Course on Waste Sorting at UiB

The University of Bergen is launching a new e-learning course on waste sorting. The course is available to employees, students, and external partners at UiB. The goal is to improve knowledge across the organization to help us become even better at sorting waste.

Steinar Sundberg from the Estate Department has led the development of the course. He explains that the aim is to raise awareness about waste sorting at UiB.

— We’re not trying to create 25,000 waste sorting experts, but we want to motivate people to throw that apple core into the food waste bin instead of general waste. Employees and students at UiB represent a significant portion of Bergen’s population, so what we do affects many around us — that gives us a responsibility, says Sundberg.

Increasing the sorting rate and reducing the amount of waste are key goals in UiB’s environmental strategy, and this course is one of several tools to help achieve them. Waste has value, and BIR Bedrift pays for properly sorted waste, which they can then resell. For UiB, this means revenue when waste is sorted correctly, while every gram of general waste is an added expense.

Currently, the sorting rate at UiB is 57%, meaning 43% of waste ends up as general waste. The goal is to reach a sorting rate of 80%.

The e-learning course was developed in collaboration with BIR Bedrift, with contributions from various units at UiB. The Sustainability Pilots also contributed to the work.

The course is available in Mitt UiB, with versions in Bokmål, Nynorsk, and English. Employees and students can take the course via this link: https://mitt.uib.no/enroll/GJX4Y3

External partners such as Coor, Sammen, and others will receive a separate link to the external version of the course.
