Main content

Carolus Clusius at the Botanical Garden in Leiden sent tulips with Henrik Høyer to Bergen as early as 1596 where they did well until they were stolen from his garden in 1603.

Probably the tulips were of the late flowering variety ('Tulipa serotinae') which also flowers in late May at Blondehuset. We have found them in old gardens along the coast of southern and western Norway, where they have been cultivated for more than a hundred years.
