Scientific staff in permanent positions

Research grants for scientific staff in permanent positions financed by UiB/The Faculty of Medicine

The research grant for stays abroad in the research period can be applied for by permanent employees in scientific positions financed by UiB/the Faculty of Medicine.  When applying for a research grant, the applicant must have applied for the sabbatical before the fixed deadline (1 May) and the research stay at the foreign institution must be included in the plan for the sabbatical.

The research grant for permanent employees in scientific positions is awarded for stays abroad lasting between six months and a year.

The following criteria are used as a basis to rank the applications:

  • Project summary (describe ongoing and planned research)
  • The significance of the stay abroad in relation to academic innovation, opportunity to implement new research methodology more quickly than would otherwise have been possible.
  • The duration of the stay (6–12 months)
  • Quality of the receiving environment
  • Quality of the applicant (publication activity over the past 5–10 years)

If a visit extends over two calendar years, the entire amount applied for must be accounted for in the first year. Financial resources determine whether the period applied for can be granted in full or only in part.

Recommendations from the researcher’s department, as well as the foreign research environment must be included in the application. A separate application form must be used, and the application sent via the department, with endorsement/approval from the Head of department.

The following rates apply: per month NOK 17.000 (Singel)/ NOK 32.000 (family)

Postdoctoral Fellows (with UiB funding)

The announcement of research grants only apply to postdoctoral fellows at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bergen, that are financed by the University/Faculty of Medicine. Externally financed postdoctoral fellow positions must apply for support through their respective financial sources (e.g NFR, Helse Vest, Innovest, Kreftforeningen). In addition we encourage to (regardless of funding) also apply for financial support through other sources.

Research grants are given in connection with stays abroad lasting from 3-12 months.

The purpose of the grant is to cover initial and additional expenditures in connection with research-related stays abroad. A one year grant might be divided into four, to cover four different stays abroad. Reasons for the need of multiple stays must be given. If the stay covers more than two calendar years, an application to register the entire amount on year one must be submitted. Whether the entire or just parts of the period applied for is granted, depends on economic resources.

The following rates apply:

Per month 17.000 Norwegian kroner(single) / 32.000 Norwegian kroner (family)

In addition it is possible to apply for the covering of travel expenses, on the condition that the least expensive mode of travelling is chosen.

The ranking of the applications is based on the following criteria:

  • Project description (a description of current and future research)
  • The importance of the stay abroad, regarding for instance professional renewal, the possibility of applying new research methods earlier
  • The length of the stay (3-12 months)
  • The quality of the recipient academic group
  • Publication activity

A recommendation from the applicant’s department, in addition to an invitation from the foreign research environment must be enclosed. A separate application form must be used, and the application should be submitted via the department, with approval from the Head of department, to the following address:

Det medisinske  fakultet
Postboks 7804
5020 Bergen

Application deadline: 1. March and 1. October

PhD Candidates (with UiB funding)

The announcement of research grants only apply to PhD Candidates at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bergen, that are financed by the University/Faculty of Medicine. Research grants are given for stays abroad with the duration from 1-6 months. 6 month grants can be divided in two (2) separate periods. Such a solution must be reasoned. If the stay covers more than two calendar years, an application to register the entire amount on year one must be submitted. Whether the entire or just parts of the period applied for is granted, depends on economic resources. The purpose of the grant is to cover initial and additional expenditures in connection with research-related stays abroad.

In addition it is possible to apply for travel expenses (least expensive mode)

The ranking of the applications is based on the following criteria:

  • Project description (a description of current and future research)
  • The importance of the stay abroad, regarding for instance professional renewal, the possibility of applying new research methods earlier
  • The length of the stay (3-12 months)
  • The quality of the recipient academic group
  • Publication activity

A recommendation from the applicant’s department, in addition to an invitation from the foreign research environment must be enclosed.
