  • Transportation mode choice
  • Substance addiction
  • Social psychology

My research interests are entailed towards three core domains:

(1) Psychological variables related to traffic safety. This includes personality traits, risk evaluations, demographics and cultural characteristics associated with risky driving behaviour in different countries spanning across Europe, Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

(2) Psychological variables associated with transportation mode use. This includes studies funded by the Norwegian Research Council which examined environmental norms, risk perception, attitudes, priorities and other psychological variables related to use of public (buses, metro), active (bicycling, walking) and car use for commuting and other urban trips. This line of research has also focused on predictors of sustainable mode choices among school children in the Middle East and China.

(3) Psychological factors predicting substance use among patients and sub-groups within the general Norwegian population. This line of research covers studies regarding treatment dropout, relapse and treatment and recovery experiences among patients with substance use disorders (SUD).

Further, the research includes studies conducted among patrons attending nightclubs in Oslo. This study focused on the correspondence between different measures of substance use (e.g. saliva tests and self-reports) and whether substance use influences violence conduct in this setting. I have also conducted longitudinal studies of medication use deploying the Norwegian prescription database and data from the HUNT-studies.

In 2010, I received a research award from the regional health authorities for my research carried out among patients with SUD. In 2017, I received the research prize given to exceptional researchers within the humanities awarded by the Royal Norwegian Society of Science and Letters (DKNVS). This prize was awarded for the entire research spectrum.
