My work is centred upon disorders of language and literacy, primarily in children and adolescents, but also in certain adult populations. Currently, I am pursuing three strands of research:

1. Aspects of developmental dyslexia in children and adolescents. Ph.d. work was conducted within the frame of the Bergen Longitudinal Dyslexia Study, where I looked at developmental dyslexia at different levels of explanation - symptomatic expression, underlying cognitive factors and brain correlates. Importantly, the developmental aspect and a longitudinal perspective was and is essential in this work. I am still associated with this project and am currently working on issues regarding both brain connectivity and writing behaviour.

2. Issues of language and literacy in female prison inmates. Previous studies have shown a high prevalence of problems with literacy in the general prison population. However, the female prison population is very small, and tends to be under-studied. My colleagues and I are interested in doing in-depth studies of this population with the main objective of describing the nature of language and literacy difficulties as well as how the women themselves experience their problems, and how issues of language and literacy have impacted upon their lives.

3. Describing developmental language disorder in Norwegian. How developmental language disorder (DLD) is expressed in Norwegian language has not yet been fully and systematically described. The aim of this project is to develop a thorough description of DLD in Norwegian children in different stages of development. This will be done using a combination of a literature review, language samples and individual testing.
