After several cases of fires due to the irresponsible use of disposable grills in Grønevika and Sandholna bathing areas, Bergen municipality has now banned the use of disposable grills here. A communal barbecue has been set up in Grønevika, and at the cabin in Sandholna, which you are allowed to use when the risk of forest fire is not great.

Grilling outside the designated fire and grill areas poses a fire risk, and there have been several fires from time to time due to disposable grills at our site. In 2021 alone, there were three such incidents. The entire rubbish container has been on fire, and there has been a fire in connection with disposable grills being thrown into the grill collector without being extinguished.

The main water network in our area dates from 1970 and only has extinguishing water capacity up to Fana folkehøgskule. Extinguishing with a helicopter cannot be used, as the plant collections would be destroyed by salt water. A fire in the Arboretum area can therefore have serious consequences both for the loss of irreplaceable plant collections, unique genetic material and rare and globally threatened species, as well as for buildings, nursing homes, schools, kindergartens, etc. near the Arboretum. The area will also be significantly degraded as a hiking and recreation area for a long time should a major fire occur.

This is the reason why Bergen municipality has now banned the use of disposable grills in this area. It will only be permitted to empty coal from the disposable grill into the permanent grill, and light it if you want to grill.
